About Me

Kay Mohlman, PhD.

My formal degree training is in sociology, with an emphasis on Southeast Asian studies. I received my BA from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1979, an MA from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1984, and a PhD. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1994, and did my doctoral research on small-scale industry in the Philippines. My earlier research efforts were supported by various grants, including Fulbright-Hays and Wenner-Gren Foundation dissertation research grants.

In Singapore I have taught in the Sociology departments of the National University of Singapore (1997-2000), the Overseas Family College Program (2000-2004), and Nanyang Technological University (2005-2006).

In tandem with my social science pursuits, I have had a longstanding interest in writing. Before launching The Writing Practice consultancy, I did freelance editing for academic colleagues in Singapore and Singapore University Press at the National University of Singapore on conference papers, journal articles and book manuscripts covering a wide range of social science and humanities topics. (A sample of my editing work may be viewed at http://www.pa-chouvy.org/yaabaa-methamphetamine-production-traffic-consumption.htm, courtesy of the author Pierre-Arnaud Chouvy). I have planned and presented workshops on thesis and dissertation writing for postgraduate students at the National University of Singapore, and I completed a certificate in English language teaching to adults (CELTA) from the British Council in Singapore in 2000.

On a more personal note, I am an American by birth, a native English speaker, and a long-term resident of Singapore.
